There are two reasons we call ourselves Broken Investing.
One is spiritual and the other is more pragmatic.
Spiritually, the Christian faith discusses the concept of brokenness. It is the idea that we need to be broken from our independence of God and our self-reliance. In Psalm 51:17, David writes: The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Before Mary pours perfume on Jesus’s head and feet, she must first break the jar to set the fragrance free (Mark 14:3 and John 12:3). Metaphorically, we too must be broken of our false selves to become our true selves in the image of Christ. We are the jar that needs brokenness so that God’s fragrant Spirit can be released.
We live in a world obsessed with money. God knows we need money to survive, and thousands of verses in the Bible discuss money or possessions. To be in the world but not of the world is to be “broken.” One of our favorite verses is Deuteronomy 8:17-18, where Moses says, You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”
We do not want to lose sight of God's Purpose and Covenant with us as we seek to produce wealth.
The other reason is more pragmatic.
We are breaking the rules and norms of investing. We have yet to find anyone who implements a strategy similar to ours. We are not seeking to be different. We are seeking to be better.
Welcome to Broken Investing.
